The Benedictine University men's volleyball team swept the #12 team in the country, Rivier University, on Saturday morning in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
As a team, BenU (5-11) tallied 34 kills, 27 digs and a season high 16.5 blocks. The Eagles were led by
Sterling Glover who had 13 kills while
Eric Tarnow had eight kills.
Markus Riemer recorded 28 assists, four digs and five block assists while
Zach Loeding had five kills and a match high nine block assists.
Tarnow began the first set with a kill to give the Eagles early momentum. Benedictine kept the lead and went up 12-6 on a Glover ace. Down 13-21, Rivier (7-8) went on an 8-1 run to bring them within one (21-22). Both teams traded points until a Loeding kill and an RU error gave BenU the 26-24 first set win.
It was the Raiders who took an early lead in the second set, up 11-7. The Eagles trailed most of the match until they slowly climbed back to tie it at 21. Glover's six kills and several costly RU attack errors gave BenU the 26-24 win.
In the third set, the Eagles tied it at nine and both teams traded kills until it was tied at 20. The Eagles scored the next two points but RU retaliated with two of their own. The Eagles reached 23 with a Tarnow kill and an RU error and a Loeding kill secured the Eagles win, 25-22.
"The team did a great job finding some consistency in our game," said head coach
Dan Buehring. "They also did a really good job scheming defensively to stop the players that we knew could win the match for Rivier. Rivier was a great team and it was nice to put together a solid performance for an entire match."
The men's volleyball team returns to MCVL action on Wednesday, March 11 when they host Loras College at 7:00 p.m. in the Dan and Ada Rice Center.
