Softball Sweeps WLC

The Benedictine University softball team returned home for two games against Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference foe Wisconsin Lutheran College on Saturday. BenU took both games, winning 8-5 and 10-2 to move to 10-2 in NACC play.

Game One

Against BenU starter Holly Haberkorn, the Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. However, the Eagles responded in the bottom half with RBI singles from Kailee Cable and Courtney Grasz to tie the score at 2-2.

Two innings later, the Warriors would get to Haberkorn again, scoring three runs this time to take a 5-2 lead. A Cable single moved the Eagles closer in the bottom of a third, as she drove in another run to make the score 5-3.

The Eagles went ahead for good in the bottom of the fourth, as Kelsey Jefferies smacked a three-run home run to put BenU up 6-5. Insurance runs would be added in the fifth courtsey of a Haberkorn RBI single and a WLC error.

In the circle, Haberkorn tossed seven innings and striking out nine while allowing five runs (four earned). At the plate, BenU tallied 10 hits, with Cable, Melissa Stoch, and Haberkorn all tallying two hits a piece.

Game Two

Benedictine started the scoring off in game two, plating four runs in the bottom of the first and sending 10 batters to the plate. Sarah Koch signled in two runs to put the Eagles out front, and Grasz (double) and Stoch (single) drove in runs later in the inning.

In the second inning, the Eagles plated two more. Chelsea White hit a solo home run (her third of the season), and Stoch doubled in a run to build the BenU lead to 6-0. Liz Jimenez stole home in the fourth to tak on another unanswered run for the Eagles.

WLC would prolong the contest by scoring runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. However, two RBI from Koch and a drop-third strike gave BenU 10 runs on the game and a sixth-inning walk-off.

Katie McKay made her first start of the year in the circle, earning the win and a complete game (six innings, two runs, one earned). The Eagles tallied 17 hits at the plate, with Shannon Fritsche, White, Koch, and Stoch all totaling three hits each.

BenU is back in action tomorrow at MSOE for a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
