LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University baseball team improved to 9-3 at home with a sweep of visiting Aurora University on Sunday afternoon, keping pace atop the conference standings.
BENEDICTINE 10, AURORA 0 - Seven Innings - Game OneBenedictine opened an early 3-0 and
Mike Irgang did the rest on the mound as the Eagles rolled to a win in the opener.
Irgang, who tossed a nine-inning shutout over MSOE on Monday, worked a seven-inning blanking on Sunday. The senior improved to 3-0 on the year by allowing just four hits while walking one and striking out five.
The Eagles plated two runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead.
Max Oppenheimer,
Justin Kovalsky, and
Brandon Clark all notched one-out singles to load the bases.
Quinn Heiner opened the scoring with a two-run single. The lead reached 3-0 in the second. Erik Callghan drove home
Kyle Bock, who doubled, with a single to center.
The game really broke open with five runs in the fifth. Heiner picked up an RBI single and Callaghan drove home two with a double.
Tim Hendricks capped the scoring with a two-run single. The game ended when Benedictine scored twice in the bottom of the seventh.
The offense collected 15 hits. Heiner finished with three along with three RBIs. Callghan, Oppenheimer, and Hendricks all notched two hits each.
BENEDICTINE 7, AURORA 1 - Game TwoOvercoming an early 1-0 first inning deficit, the Eagles plated seven unanswered runs to cruise to the sweep.
Mike Ostrowski led off the bottom of the second with a single and
Nick Fillmore followed by being hit with a pitch. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt before Bock and Callaghan drove home runs with singles. Two more scored in the third inning as Ostrowski doubled home a pair. Hendricks and Kovalsky helped gain separation with RBI singles in a three-run fourth.
Christopher Jordan, the 2013 conference Pitcher of the Year, worked eight innings and allowed just the first inning run to improve to 2-0 on the year. Jordan allowed nine hits and struck out two.
Timothy Feeley tossed the ninth to preserve the victory.
Benedictine produced 17 hits in the second contest. Hendricks, Kovalsky, and Ostrowski picked up three apiece. Oppenheimer, Callaghan, and Bock added two each. Hendricks has reached base in a season high 13 straight contests. Clark and Hendricks both own current nine-game streaks, the longest of the year.
Benedictine (13-12, 8-2 NACC) is over the .500 mark for the first time this season and remains tied for first with Concordia Chicago. The Eagles next play on Wednesday night at Illinois Wesleyan in a 6:00 p.m. contest.
