LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University baseball team bounced back with a doubleheader sweep of Dominican University on Sunday afternoon.
BENEDICTINE 3, DOMINICAN 2 - Game OneBenedictine made three second inning runs stand up in capturing the opener.
The three-run rally in the third opened with a walk from
Erik Callaghan and a
Tim Hendricks being hit by a pitch. WIth one away,
Justin Kovalsky tripled to the wall in right, scoring a pair.
Mike Ostrowski collected a two-out RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0. Dominican tallied a pair of runs in the top of the fourth but could get no closer.
Mike Spalla worked seven innings on the mound, earning his first win of the year.
Timothy Feeley tossed the ninth for his first save. Benedictine managed seven hits in the game with two coming from Ostrowski.
Brandon Clark extended his hitting streak to 14 games in the opener.
BENEDICTINE 4, DOMINICAN 3 - Game TwoThe Eagles erased a 3-1 deficit in the bottom of the ninth to walk-off with the victory.
Both teams scored unearned runs in the first inning with Benedictine netting a run without a hit. Dominican opened a 3-1 lead with single tallies in the fourth and eighth. With steady rain falling throughout the second game, Benedictine could not mount much offensively until the ninth.
With two outs, Benedictine had the bases loaded due to three walks. Hendricks walked to force home a run.
Max Oppenheimer won the game by singling through the left side of the infield on a 3-2 pitch to score
Nick Severino and
Matthew Higgs.
Christopher Jordan tossed seven innings on the mound and allowed just two earned runs while striking out three.
Dylan Smith worked the final two innings and earned the win. Ostrowski notched two of the five hits. Hendricks picked up a hit in each game as the senior nears the school's all-time hit mark along with the conference record.
Benedictine (15-16, 10-4 NACC) plays a non-conference game on Tuesday night at Carthage.
