LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Benedictine University baseball team split a pair of one-run decisions at Rockford on Sunday afternoon.
BENEDICTINE 3, ROCKFORD 2 - Game OneBenedictine rallied from down 2-0 to score a win in the opener.
Rockford scored twice in the bottom of the second against Benedictine starter
Christopher Jordan to take an early lead. Jordan did not allow another run the entire contest, tossing a complete game and allowing just four hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
Benedictine tallied single runs in the fourth, eighth, and ninth to steal the win.
Mike Ostrowski singled to lead off the fourth and scored on a single from
Nick Fillmore.
Brandon Clark led off the eighth by reaching on an error and scored on a single from Fillmore.
Erik Callaghan opened the ninth with a single and moved up on a sacrifice bunt before scoring the game-winning run on a single from
Kyle Bock.
Bock posted three hits with Clark and Fillmore adding two each as Benedictine logged 11 in the opener.
ROCKFORD 9, BENEDICTINE 8 - Game TwoRockford scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to steal a victory and salvage a split.
Benedictine raced to a 4-0 lead by striking for four runs in the top of the third. Callaghan led off the inning with a walk while
Tim Hendricks followed with a triple to drive him home. The hit marked the 229th in the career of Hendricks, setting a Benedictine career record. Bock immediately singled home the second run. Ostrowski made it 3-0 with an RBI fielder's choice. The final run of the frame came across on a balk.
Rockford put three runs on the board in the bottom of the inning. Benedictine responded with single runs in the fourth and fifth to open a 6-3 edge. Hendricks picked up a sacrifice fly in the fourth with Fillmore scoring on an error in the fifth. The hosts tallied two more runs in the fifth to pull within 6-5.
The Eagles extended the lead to 8-5 with a pair in the seventh. Fillmore notched an RBI single in the frame while
Justin Kovalsky also drove home a run with a single. Rockford scored four in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead, netting the winning run on a passed ball.
Mike Spalla started and worked five innings in a no-decision. Spalla struck out six.
Dylan Smith suffered the loss. Fillmore, Hendricks, and Kovalsky picked up two hits each as Benedictine finished with 10. The second hit from Hendricks in the sixth tied the conference record for career hits.
Benedictine (16-18, 11-5 NACC) will makeup Saturday's rain out with Marian University at 3:00 p.m. on Monday in a doubleheader. The date will double as Senior Day.
