Box Score The Benedictine University softball team competed in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament on Friday, falling 3-0 to top-seeded Aurora University in a winner's bracket contest.
BenU's offense was stifled for most of the contest, as AU's Vanessa Hartzell held the Eagles to just two hits on the afternoon. Both hits came early in the contest, as
Sarah Koch was stranded on second after a first-inning double and
Miranda Hiemer was caught stealing after pinch-running for a
Melissa Stoch single. The Eagles were held hitless for the rest of the game and off the basepaths until the seventh inning when Koch drew a walk.
Holly Haberkorn (14-7) did all she could to keep the Eagles in the game, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits through six innings. In the third, AU scored on a two-out single to take a 1-0 lead before a solo home run to open up the fourth inning. In the sixth, a Haberkorn error allowed another run to cross home plate.
The Eagles now need to win three consecutive games on Saturday to win the NACC Championship. BenU will oppose third-seeded Concordia-Wisconsin at 9:00 a.m. A win opens up the opportunity to oppose AU once again, which would mean BenU must win two straight over the Spartans to win the tournament title.
