LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University men's soccer team secured the first win of the year by downing North Central 3-1 on Monday night.
Benedictine created plenty of chances in the contest, holding a 19-8 advantage in shots.
Nick Kapetanos notched the first goal of the season late in the first half, finishing a breakaway following a cross from
Erik Stammer in the 39th minute.
Jonny Lehman controlled a turnover and shot it into an open net in the 61st minute to make the score 2-0. Kapetanos extended the lead to 3-0 by finishing a nice cross set up from
Yair Ortega and
Miguel Sanchez.
"We bounced back from a poor showing on Saturday and put out a tremendous performance," head coach
Rich Nassif said. "I thought we showed true belief, composure, and a grit to handle a very heated match. I especially applaud our guys for the way they handed North Central's pressure and created quality scoring chances all match."
Kapetanos collected eight shots, putting six on goal as Benedictine sent 10 on target.
Gio Ovalle added a pair of shots.
Steve Mack played the entire contest in goal and faced just two shots, one of which was a penalty kick that resulted in the lone goal for North Central.
"We need to continue this attacking momentum while still cleaning up our possession and defending," Nassif added. "The guys have bought in to what we are all about, and this is just the start of what this team can accomplish."
