Men's Volleyball Wins 2016 Season Opener

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Benedictine University men's volleyball team traveled to Milwaukee for their first two matches of the 2016 season. The Eagles defeated Marian University in four sets but fell to host Milwaukee School of Engineering in the final match.

THE DETAILS
• Markus Riemer opened up the scoring with two straight aces and the Eagles took a 13-8 lead in the first set. Marian rallied back to tie it at 19 and several Benedictine unforced errors gave MU the 25-22 first set win
• After a back and forth start, Marian tied it at 18. The Eagles would go on to score seven of the next nine points which ended with a Sterling Glover kill and Jon Mueller ace for the 25-20 win in the second set
• The third set was another close start. A Zach Loeding block gave BenU the lead and the Eagles never looked back tallying six blocks for the 25-18 victory
• Despite being out-hit by the Sabres, Benedictine pulled out a 25-21 fourth set victory to give them a win in the season opener
• This is the inaugural season for Marian men's volleyball and is Benedictine's second season as a program

STAT LEADERS
• Glover led all players with 15 kills and a .333 hitting percentage while also tallying eight digs
• Freshman Kyle VanStedum tallied five kills with just one error and had four block assists
• Loeding led the Eagles with three block assists and two solo blocks and also had four kills with just one hitting error
• Newcomer Jon Mueller had 10 kills and hit .333 while Riemer tallied 40 assists and three aces
• Defensively, Ian Thompson led BenU with 10 digs and Jonathan Valentini had eight digs

THE DETAILS
• Benedictine trailed early in the first set and could not recover, tallying just six kills in a 25-20 defeat
• In the second set, BenU took an early 3-0 win by the serve of Jeremy Villarreal. The Eagles led by more than two points the entire set and tallied five blocks and 13 kills in the 25-20 win
• MSOE took an early lead and never looked back for a 25-20 third set victory
• A Mueller kill tied the set at five but the Raiders went on a 6-1 run en route to a 25-18 fourth set win

FROM THE COACH
"We did a lot of nice things today," said head coach Dan Buehring. "Serving was not one of them. We are going to put in some hard work to fix that, then we will be able to compete at a much higher level."

STAT LEADERS
• Glover led the team with 11 kills while Riemer had 36 assists and 10 digs
• Mueller had nine kills and VanStedum recorded six block assists
• Thompson had a game high 17 digs and Dan Gibadlo had four kills, five block assists and three solo blocks
• The Eagles had 17 serving errors and were aced 11 times

The men's volleyball team hosts Dominican University at 12:00 p.m. and Calumet College of St. Joseph at 5:00 p.m. this Saturday in their 2016 home opener!
