Eagles Defeat Calumet College, Fall to Dominican

LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University men's volleyball team took #13 Dominican University to five sets but turned around and defeated Calumet College of St. Joseph in straight sets on Saturday night in the Dan and Ada Rice Center.

THE DETAILS
• Benedictine tallied an early 7-2 lead in the first set but allowed Dominican to slow come back. The Stars tied it at 18 and their offense came alive to win 25-22
• In the second set, BenU took a 4-1 lead on a Zach Loeding solo block. The Eagles maintained a consistent two-point lead throughout the game but let DU tie it at 3. A Kyle VanStedum kill gave BenU set point and a DU error sealed the Eagles 26-24 win
• The Stars led early in the third set but the Eagles tied it at 10 on the serve of Jake Moran. Benedictine took a lead and scored two straight on the kills of Sterling Glover and Loeding to take a 24-21 lead. A Dominican error gave the Eagles the 25-22 win
• Up two sets to one, Benedictine tallied several unforced errors in the fourth set and trailed 11-7. Solo blocks from Markus Riemer and Glover gave the Eagles momentum to tie it at 13. The fourth set saw 4 ties and 8 lead changes down the stretch as both teams battled back and forth but it was DU who came out on top 33-31.
• Dominican went up 2-0 early and never looked back, winning the fifth set 15-10.
• The match saw 36 ties and 16 lead changes

THE STATS
• Glover led the Eagles with 17 kills while Moran tallied 11
• Markus Riemer had 47 assists and 17 digs
• Ian Thompson and Jonathan Valentini combined for 30 digs
• Loeding tallied six block assists and two solo blocks while Jon Mueller recorded seven block assists
• Kyle VanStedum owned seven kills and two solo blocks

THE DETAILS
• Benedictine led by as many as eight in the first set and tallied 14 digs and 13 kills (a .286 hitting percentage). They won 25-15
• Jeremy Villarreal had six kills to help lead the Eagles to a 25-17 second set win
• Lewis Stein and Kacper Mazurek each had threek ills while Mueller talled four kills in the third set. The Eagles hit .591 with 14 kills and just one error for the 25-16 win

THE STATS
• Benedictine hit an impressive .239 with 35 kills in the match
• Mueller led the team with nine kills while Villarreal tallied seven kills with no errors, good for a .636 hitting percentage
• Riemer had 27 assists and nine digs while Valentini had six digs
• Erik Kerber recorded three kills and had two block assists
