Men's Volleyball Opens MCVL Play with Win

LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University men's volleyball team opened up Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League action on Friday night in the Dan and Ada Rice Center. The Eagles defeated Loras College, who they lost to earlier in the season, in four sets.

Benedictine 3, Loras 1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-18, 27-25)

THE DETAILS
• Benedictine took an early lead in the first set but Loras rallied back to tie it at 12. A Sterling Glover kill gave the Eagles a 19-17 lead and a Markus Riemer block and a John Mathews kill secured the 25-20 win. Benedictine tallied 18 kills and only two errors for a .516 hitting percentage
• The Eagles trailed the entire second set. A Mathews kills put BenU within one but several unforced errors gave Loras the 25-21 win
• In the third set, Benedictine took a 9-6 lead on a Jake Moran kill and maintained a steady lead for the rest of the set, winning 25-18
• The Eagles tallied 16 kills in the fourth set that saw a back and forth effort from both teams. The Eagles took a 25-24 lead on a Loras serving error but an LC kill tied it at 25. Benedictine scored two unanswered points off the hands of Kyle VanStedum and Mathews for the 27-25 victory

STAT LEADERS
• Glover led all players and tallied a season high with 18 kills
• Mathews had a season high 14 kills and also had two aces and nine digs while VanStedum rounded out the double-digit kills with 10
• Zach Loeding recorded seven kills and three block assists while Markus Riemer added 45 assists and nine digs
• Ian Thompson led all players with 17 digs

FROM THE COACH
"The guys did a really great job of being aggressive and putting some balls down," said head coach Dan Buehring. "They did some great things out on the court tonight that makes me very excited moving forward."

UP NEXT
Benedictine is back in action on Saturday afternoon when they continue MCVL action and host North Central College at 12:00 pm in the Dan and Ada Rice Center.
