Women's Lacrosse Drops Delay Filled Contest

LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University women's lacrosse team battled through weather and into overtime but dropped a home non-conference game to Saint Mary's College.

FINAL SCORE
Saint Mary's 14, Benedictine 13 - OT

THE DETAILS
•
A pair of weather delays, each lasting nearly an hour, dampered a back and forth offensive battle
• Becca Gullett poked home a feed from Ella Campbell less than a minute into the game to open the scoring
• Saint Mary's instantly answered before the first delay of nearly an hour due to lightning
• Following the first delay Benedictine tied the score twice after a frantic start to the game
• Samantha Link made the score 3-3 at the 23:54 mark before Saint Mary's scored twice in the ensuing minute
• Link and Ella Campbell both bounced back to score on free position attempts to even the game again at 5-5
• With the game even at 6-6, another lightning delay ceased action for nearly an hour
• Madison Horan and Gullett scored consecutive goals to hand Benedictine the lead for the first time since 1-0 but Saint Mary's tied the score headed to the half
• Three straight goals from the visitors built a 10-7 lead at the onset of the second before Benedictine rallied with three to tie
• Gullett scored unassisted with 13:47 left to knot the score at 10-10
• Benedictine would not lead again, but a tally from Gullett in the final minute forced the extra session

STAT LEADERS
•
The game was virtually even statistically with Benedictine holding a 29-28 edge in shots
• Draw controls were even at 12 apiece with Saint Mary's holding a slim 26-24 advantage in groundballs
• Benedictine scored four times on free position attempts and successfully completed 19-of-21 clears
• Hannah Smith played the second half and overtime in goal after Rebecca Berg started with Berg tallying six saves and Smith three
• Gullett scored six times and added an assist with five groundballs and five caused turnovers
• Link tallied five goals and came up with four groundballs
