Men's Volleyball Edges Marian

The Benedictine University men's volleyball team won their ninth Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League on Friday night, defeating Marian University in five sets.

Benedictine 3, Marian 2 (25-21, 24-26, 25-20, 16-25, 15-10)

THE DETAILS
• The first set saw Benedictine take a 2-0 lead and never look back en route to a 25-21 victory. The Eagles recorded 14 kills and a .500 attack percentage
• There were 18 ties and nine lead changes in the second set that had both teams battling back and forth but it was Marian who came out on top, 26-24
• With the score tied at nine in the third set, a Markus Riemer kill gave BenU the lead and they never lost it, winning 25-20
• In the fourth set, the Eagles trailed early and could not recover, allowing Marian to record 13 kills with a .429 attack percentage
• With the match on the line in the fifth set, Benedictine trailed 5-3. A timeout sparked the BenU offense as they went on a 3-0 run to take the lead. The Eagles scored the last four points of the set to win 15-10

THE STATS
• Jon Mueller led all players and recorded a season high 17 kills while Sterling Glover had 14 kills
• Zach Loeding tallied nine kills with zero errors
• Kyle VanStedum had six kills (a .400 attack percentage) and also tallied three blocks
• Ian Thompson led the defense with 16 digs

UP NEXT
Men's volleyball, now 16-8 overall and 9-3 in MCVL action, travels to Lakeland College on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm for a crucial final regular season contest that can decide the Eagles fate in the post season.
