Baseball Sprints to Sweep of Marian

FOND du LAC, Wis. - Playing on the road for the first time this season in conference action, the Benedictine University baseball team came away with a conference sweep for the first time this year, running past Marian University.

THE DETAILS
•
Two first inning runs held up in the opener
• Justin Montalvo was hit by a pitch to open the game and with one away Kyle Bock singled and stole second
• Tanner Kiser knocked home a run with a groundout and a single from Dom DeMicco stretched the margin to 2-0
• Benedictine gained insurance on a 2-1 lead thanks to a two-run homer from Erik Callaghan in the eighth
• Ivan Guzman allowed just a single run in five innings despite walking six to collect the win
• Christopher Nesbitt tossed the final two frames for his third save
• The second contest created a much different affair after a similar start
• Benedictine logged two more first inning runs on RBI singles from Bock and Kiser
• The lead reached 3-0 in the second before Marian evened the score with three in the bottom of the third
• Benedictine quickly struck for three in the fourth to take the lead for good and padded the edge by scoring in each of the final three frames
• Nick Severino put Benedictine ahead for good with an infield single
• Justin Montalvo and Brandon Gipson also drove home runs in the inning
• Andrew Hotze logged RBIs in the seventh and ninth as part of the late rallies
• Alex Wolfe worked three innings with James Holub tossing three innings to earn the win
• Will Diessner pitched the final three innings to pick up his first save of the season

STAT LEADERS
•
Benedictine stole 12 bases in the second contest and four in the first game
• DeMicco was the only player to post more than one hit in the first contest
• Hotze and Severino picked up two hits each in the second contest while Bock scored a pair of runs

UP NEXT
Benedictine (10-8, 5-3 NACC) will play a non-conference game on the road at North Park on Thursday night in a game that was originally slated for Tuesday but moved due to the Marian reschedule
