Baseball Splits Tight Contests

LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University baseball team split a pair of close contests in a conference doubleheader with Wisconsin Lutheran College on Saturday.

THE DETAILS
• Two more games were decided in the seventh inning or later
• Benedictine has played in 13 games decided by three runs or less this season while Wisconsin Lutheran has played in 12 such contests
• Game two marked the sixth time this season in which Benedictine held a lead in the eighth or later and could not score
• Game one saw Benedictine struggle at the plate against another left-hander
• A single from Kyle Bock in the fourth inning was the only hit until the seventh inning
• Tanner Kiser lined a 2-1 offering over the wall in right for the second hit of the game, also scoring Erik Callaghan and handing Benedictine a 2-1 lead
• The team would tack on two more runs in the eighth
• Justin Montalvo logged an RBI double and Brandon Gipson contributed an RBI single in the frame
• Frank Greco twirled a complete game in the win, his second complete game of the contest
• Greco walked one and struck out five while allowing seven hits
• Benedictine was able to build an early 3-1 lead in the second contest with runs in each of the first three innings
• Gipson singled home a run two batters into the first while Montalvo doubled home a run in the second to give Benedictine a 2-1 lead after a run from the visitors in the second
• A sacrifice fly from Dom DeMicco produced a run in the third before Wisconsin Lutheran evened the game with a pair in the fourth
• With runners at first and second in the seventh, Callaghan put Benedictine ahead 4-3 with a single down the left field line
• Wisconsin Lutheran grabbed the lead with a two-out two-run single in the ninth and held on for the win

STAT LEADERS
• Benedictine finished with five hits in the opener, coming from five different individuals
• Game two saw 11 hits with two each coming from Montalvo, Kiser, Nicholas Quick, and Nick Severino
• Kamren Ackerman started the second contest on the mound, working four innings
• Marty Maves was in line for the win before the rally in the ninth after working 3.2 blank frames, striking out four
