Softball Splits with Marian

The Benedictine University softball team split a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader with Marian University on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles won game one 8-0 but fell in extra innings in game two 4-3.
 
GAME ONE
THE FINAL

THE DETAILS
• A busy first saw the Eagles plate four runs. Shannon Fritsche led things off with a single.
• Fritsche quickly scored on a double by Courtney Grasz.
• The hit parade continued as Kailee Cable hit a single and advanced the runner to third.
• Melissa Stoch then took a pitch deep, connecting on a three-run home run.
• In the fifth inning the Eagles extended their lead to 8-0 behind three hits and four runs.
• Bases loaded walks by Holly Haberkorn and Selena Kweder accounted for two runs.
• Later, Kassee Johnson singled to bring home two additional insurance runs.
 
THE STATS
• Grasz was 2-2 with a run scored and an RBI
• Cable was 2-3 with two runs scored
• Stoch was 2-3 with a three RBI and two runs scored
• Haberkorn (12-4) pitched five innings, surrendering only two hits, striking out four

THE FINAL

Marian 4, Benedictine 3 (8 innings)
 
THE DETAILS
• Marian took the early first inning lead in game two with two runs on four hits.
• The Eagles were able to get one back in the top of the second on an RBI double by Kassee Johnson.
• With their backs against the wall the Eagles clawed one run back in the top of the seventh on a double by Kailee Cable.
• In the top of the eighth, the Eagles took their first lead of the game on a Johnson sacrifice fly, scoring Angie Malsack.
• The Eagles could not hold on to the lead though falling 3-4, as Marian scored two runs in the bottom eighth.
 
THE STATS
• Cable went 1-2 with an RBI
• Holly Haberkorn was 2-4 with a run scored
• Johnson went 1-3 with two RBI
• Melissa Guzior pitched seven and a third innings, surrendering four runs on nine hits
• Haberkorn made an appearance in the bottom of the eighth, allowing one hit
 
UP NEXT
Benedictine softball, now 23-11 overall and 11-5 in conference play, will host Lakeland College for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday, April 24.
