Five Run First Costs Baseball

LISLE, Ill. - Wheaton College scored five runs in the first inning to capture a non-conference contest from the Benedictine University baseball team.

THE DETAILS
•
Wheaton sent 10 men to the plate in the first inning, scoring five times on just two hits by virtue of two errors and four walks
• Benedictine starter Michael Mulder did not record an out
• The bullpen provided Benedictine a chance to rally, allowing just single runs in the third and ninth
• Jacob Trumpis threw six dazzling innings of relief, striking out nine including the side in order in the top of the fifth
• Christopher Nesbitt logged the final three innings and retired the first six batters he faced
• Benedictine scored a pair of runs in the third to pull within 6-2
• Nick Severino led off the inning by drawing a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch before a single from Kyle Bock brought home the first run
• Bock stole second and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Dom DeMicco
• With the bases loaded and one away in the seventh, Benedictine scored just a single run on a groundout from Frank Greco

Tanner Kiser finished with three hits including a double
• Andrew Hotze notched a pair of hits and also coaxed a pair of walks
• Benedictine finished with nine hits in the contest
• Severino has now reached base in 19 consecutive contests, the second longest streak by a Benedictine player this season
