Baseball Sweeps Rockford

ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Benedictine University baseball team pulled closer to securing a slot in the conference tournament with a doubleheader sweep at Rockford.

THE DETAILS
•
Frank Greco twirled seven solid innings to improve to 6-0 on the season in the opener
• Trailing 1-0 after one, Benedictine took control with four runs in the second
• All four runs came after the first two hitters of the inning struck out
• Chayancze Stirbis plated the first run with an RBI single to score Brandon Gipson, who opened the rally with a single
• Justin Montalvo tripled home a pair into the right field corner to give Benedictine the lead and eventually scored on a wild pitch
• Benedictine would score in each of the final four frames to break the contest open and end it after eight innings
• Gipson singled home a pair during a three-run fifth while five runs in the eighth shortened the game
• D.J. Dillon knocked home a run in the inning with Andrew Hotze singling home a pair and Gipson adding another RBI
• Joe Palasiewicz struck out nine in eight shutout innings and the offense scored in each of the first three frames in game two
• Rockford did not record a hit until the fifth against Palasiewicz, who improved to 4-1
• Gipson coaxed a bases loaded walk in the top of the first while Nick Severino doubled home a run in the second
• Two runs in the third made the lead 4-0 following another RBI single from Gipson and a run-scoring hit from Erik Callaghan
• The games were make up contests from Sunday

STAT LEADERS
•
Just two relievers appeared in the doubleheader with Marty Maves working an inning in the opener and Will Diessner one frame in the second contest
• Benedictine amassed 12 hits in the opener and 10 in the second affair
• Gipson logged a 4-for-5 opener with four RBIs and a two RBI showing in game two
• Stirbis and Hotze also collected a pair of hits in the opener
• Callaghan, Severino and Dom DeMicco all picked up two hits in the second contest
• Benedictine swiped 11 bases in the second contest with four coming from Stirbis

Benedictine (17-14, 11-7 NACC) faces UW-Stevens Point on Tuesday afternoon in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader to continue a busy week which will feature 10 games
