Shutout Enables Baseball to Split Conference Opener

LISLE, Ill. - Frank Greco twirled eight blank innings to help the Benedictine University baseball team salvage a split of a doubleheader against Lakeland College to open conference play.

THE DETAILS
•
For the fourth time this season, Benedictine held a lead in the eighth inning but could not score a win in the opener
• Tanner Kiser hit a solo homer in the second to give Benedictine a momentary 1-0 lead
• After Lakeland scored twice in the bottom of the frame, Benedictine, playing as the road team, plated three runs in the third to take the lead
• Chayancze Stirbis put Benedictine ahead with a two-run double
• Lakeland was able to rally, eventually taking the lead with a four-run eighth inning
• All four runs came with two outs
• Benedictine forced extra innings by scoring twice in the top of the ninth on an RBI single from Kiser and a sacrifice fly from Brandon Gipson
• Lakeland was able to load the bases in the bottom of the 11th and plate the winning tally
• Greco set the tone in game two, striking out 10 in eight innings
• Dom DeMicco logged an RBI single in the top of the first to give Greco all the support he would need
• Five runs on eight hits in the fourth inning allowed Benedictine to put the game out of reach
• Brandon Gipson and Kyle Bock logged run-scoring singles in the frame while Kiser roped an RBI double and Justin Montalvo collected a two-run single

Benedictine tallied 15 hits in the first contest and 18 in game two
• The team has posted 10 or more hits in four consecutive games
• Bock has hit safely in all 12 games this season
• The top five hitters in the lineups collected two hits or more in game two with Montalvo adding three from the nine hole
• Stirbis scored three runs in game two
• Christopher Nesbitt tossed the ninth in the second contest and pitched in both games as Benedictine used six pitchers in the first game
• Joe Palasiewicz worked six innings in the first game
• Kiser finished 4-for-4 in the opener with three RBIs
• Erik Callaghan connected on a solo homer in the first game

Benedictine (6-6, 1-1 NACC) will attempt to make up the rained out contests from Saturday on Tuesday afternoon at home
