Baseball Splits with MSOE

LISLE, Ill. - Making up a doubleheader postponed due to cold conditions on Saturday, the Benedictine University baseball team split a doubleheader with MSOE.

FINAL SCORE
Gm 1: Benedictine 8, MSOE 3
Gm 2: MSOE 5, Benedictine 0

THE DETAILS
•
The first game was all Benedictine virtually from the outset while game two saw MSOE shut down the top hitting offense in the conference, putting an end to a string of five consecutive contests with 10 or more hits by limiting the hosts to a season low three
• Chayancze Stirbis led off the opener with a single and moved up on a failed pickoff attempt before swiping third and scoring on a wild pitch
• Three third inning runs allowed the game to open up
• Brandon Gipson coaxed a bases loaded walk while Erik Callaghan singled home two
• The advantage reached 5-0 before MSOE scored in the fifth to break a stretch of 14 scoreless frames by the Benedictine staff
• Benedictine led 8-1 entering the ninth before a pair of runs made the game interesting as MSOE left the bases loaded
• MSOE starter Jacob Roley spun a complete game in the second contest, retiring 13 in a row at one point
• The visitors scored a single run in the third and gained distance with two runs in the fifth and sixth
• The shutout marked the first of the season against Benedictine, who have been on the winning side twice

STAT LEADERS
•
Ivan Guzman collected the win in the first game by working 5.2 innings
• Four relievers combined to close out the win with Marty Maves working two perfect innings
• Benedictine wreaked havoc on the bases with nine steals including four from Justin Montalvo, who scored three runs
• The offense tallied 11 hits in the opener with Stirbis, Dom DeMicco, and Montalvo each logging a pair
• Montalvo also added two hits and a steal in the second game
• Alex Wolfe worked six innings in the second game while Kamren Ackerman worked the final three frames unscathed
