Softball Splits Conference Opener

The Benedictine University softball team split their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener on Sunday afternoon, falling to Alverno College in the first game of a doubleheader, but beating the Inferno in five innings in game two.

GAME ONE
THE FINAL

Benedictine 0, Alverno 3

THE DETAILS
• Alverno took a 2-0 lead after the first inning off of two hits and one Benedictine error. They scored their final run in the third inning
• Benedictine only collected five hits in seven innings and also tallied three errors

THE STATS
• Melissa Guzior (6-4) received the loss for BenU, alloing six hits with two earned runs and seven strikeouts

GAME TWO
THE FINAL

Benedictine 11, Alverno 0 (5 innings)

THE DETAILS
• Benedictine scored four runs in both the first and second innings to take an 8-0 lead
• Angie Malsack led the off the game with a triple followed by a Shannon Fritsche RBI double. Holly Haberkorn collected two RBI's in the inning
• Kailee Cable had a three-RBI double in the second
• After tallying another run in the third and up 9-0, Haberkorn held onto a no-hitter heading into the fourth. Alverno collected two runs in the last two innings
• Cable tripled to lead off the fourth and scored on a Haberkorn sac bunt. Jenna Boyajian tripled to center, scoring the final run of the game

THE STATS
• Malsack was 3-4 with three runs while Boyajian was 3-3
• Cable was 2-3 with three RBI and Haberkorn was 2-2 with four RBI
• Haberkorn (5-3) allowed just two hits with two strikeouts in five innings

UP NEXT
The Eagles, now 11-7 overall and 1-1 in the NACC, travel to Concordia University-Chicago on Monday, April 4 for a 3:00 pm NACC doubleheader.
