Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Wins NCAA Regional Opener

The Benedictine University softball team came from behind to defeat Alma College 2-1 in ten innings in the Eagles first game of the NCAA DIII Softball Regional Tournament in Alma, Michigan. The win marked head coach Kate Heidkamp's 500th of her career.

"This was such a huge win for us over a great program," said junior pitcher Holly Haberkorn. "Coming into this game we knew the Alma pitcher was going to be one of the toughest we have faced all year. We definitely didn't have our hitting shoes on, as Coach Kate likes to say, but we had timely hits which is what counts! Our defense was stellar this entire game and we made some incredible plays. Everyone did their job and that is what got us the win!"

THE FINAL
#4 Benedictine 2, #1 Alma 1 (10 innings)

THE SCORING DETAILS
• After a scoreless first inning, Benedictine threatened in the second after a Haberkorn single. Despite stealing second, the BenU offense could not deliver a run
• Alma scored first in the bottom of the third after a single and a Benedictine error to take the 1-0 lead
• The Eagles evened the score in the fifth inning. Jenna Boyajian led off with a single down the left field line and with two outs Kassee Johnson walked. With runners on, Shannon Fritsche delivered the tying run, a single to right field
• Benedictine threatened again in the sixth inning, with bases loaded and only one out but the Alma defense forced two outs to keep the score 1-1
• In the ninth, Alma had back-to-back singles and a BenU error loaded the bases. Haberkorn forced a pop up and a groundout to end the inning
 • With one out in the tenth inning, Shannon Fritsche doubled and would score on a Courtney Grasz single to take the 2-1 lead
• Haberkorn and the BenU defense shut down Alma in the bottom of the frame for the 2-1 victory

THE STATS
• Fritsche was 2-5 with an RBI
• Grasz was 2-4 with an RBI
• Haberkorn and Boyajian recorded singles
• On the mound, Haberkorn threw a complete game, allowing 10 hits and zero earned runs with one walk
• Alma out-hit BenU 10-7

"It's always exciting playing a new team we have never played before," added Fritsche. "We knew coming into today that we had to be aggressive on offense. Although it took us a couple of innings to get going, our bats came alive when we needed them to the most. Playing a 10-inning game is always tough but our defense held strong the whole time. It's such a great feeling to start the weekend off with a 'W', especially one that gave Kate her 500th win!"
