Softball Advances to NCAA Super Regional

The Benedictine University softball team once again won back-to-back games when facing elimination, defeating Heidelberg University twice, to advance to the NCAA Super Regional next weekend.

Benedictine performed the same feat last weekend, defeating Aurora University twice in the same day to win the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament.

"I am in awe of how this team has consistently battled back," said head coach Kate Heidkamp. "Not only are they an incredible group of girls to be around, but they play together and with a ton of heart. It's just awesome to be a part of."

GAME TWO FINAL
Benedictine 13, Heidelberg 3

THE SCORING DETAILS
• The Eagles took an early lead in the bottom of the first after a Melissa Stoch two-RBI double down the right field line
• Benedictine tallied four more runs in the third inning that saw Kailee Cable score Shannon Fritsche followed by a Courtney Grasz RBI single. Jenna Boyajian scored two runs with a single through the left side
• Heidelberg threatened in the fifth inning, scoring three runs off of four hits
• The BenU offense stayed hot, scoring two runs in the fifth. With two outs, Boyajian doubled to score one run and an HU error allowed the final run of the inning
• Up 8-3 in the sixth inning, Kassee Johnson and Fritsche led off with walks. A Grasz fielder's choice tallied a run and another HU error made the score 10-3
• With two on, Boyajian stepped up to the plate and blasted a three-run homer over the left field fence to end the game and hand the Eagles the NCAA Regional Championship

"The intensity that our team has is unbelievable," said Boyajian. "We fought hard all the way to the end. We are ready for the Super Regional! Go Eagles!"

THE STATS
• Cable was 2-4 with an RBI
• Grasz was 2-3 with three runs scored and two RBI
• Stoch and Boyajian were both 3-4 with two runs scored. Boyajian tallied six RBI
• Senior Melissa Guzior, now 15-8, allowed three earned runs and nine hits while striking out three batters in 5.0 innings

"We were definitely the underdog heading into today," added Guzior. "But we just stayed humble and our offense had their hitting shoes on and our defense made some amazing plays. All I had to do was focus and believe in my defense and I knew we'd come out on top."
