Women's Volleyball Opens NACC Play With Win



The Benedictine University women's volleyball team opened up Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action on Tuesday night in the Dan and Ada Rice Center where they defeated Alverno College (1-9, 0-1 NACC) in four sets.

THE DETAILS
•Benedictine trailed early in the first set after several serve receive errors, but rallied to take a 20-18 lead and never look back
• In the second set, the Eagles took an 8-4 advantage but allowed Alverno to go on a 9-0 run en route to a 25-23 win
• The third set saw the Eagles lead the entire set, tallying 10 kills for the 25-15 win
• With back-to-back aces, Kristina Billie gave BenU an 8-2 advantage early on as the Eagles would easily win the fourth set 25-11
 
STAT LEADERS
• Benedictine recorded a season high .280 hitting percentage with 44 kills
•Claudia Schmidt led BenU with 12 kills and just two errors for an impressive .588 hitting percentage
• Erin Wiegand and Emily Chitwood combined for 10 and seven kills, respectively
• Keriann Groen tallied four kills and four block assists while Kelcey Adams tallied 19 assists, four digs and two block assists
• Defensively, Billie tied for a match high 14 digs and also had three aces
• Also in double-digit digs was Vanessa Possidoni with 10 while Alyssa O'Boyle had 11 digs and 17 assists
 
FROM THE COACH
"I think we did a lot of nice things tonight," said head coach Jennifer Wildes. "But we also did a lot of things we know we need to work on. To get where we want to go we need to clean some stuff up. I give Alverno a ton of credit, they served tough. But once we settled down we looked good and had a really nice hitting percentage."
 
UP NEXT
Benedictine, now 5-5 overall and 1-0 in NACC play, travels to Lake Forest College on Friday, September 16 when they will compete in the annual Red and Black Triangular. The Eagles will take on North Central College at 4:00pm followed by an 8:00pm match against Lake Forest.
