Eagles Battle to a Split at Red and Black Triangular



The Benedictine University women's volleyball team split a pair of tough five-set matches at the annual Red and Black Triangular on Friday night at Lake Forest College. The Eagles fell to North Central College before defeating host Lake Forest. North Central defeated Lake Forest in straight sets.
 
NORTH CENTRAL
THE FINAL

Benedictine 2, North Central 3 (20-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-21, 8-15)
 
THE DETAILS
• Benedictine trailed 6-0 in the first set before rallying to come back and take an 11-8 lead off of nine straight serves from Alyssa O'Boyle that included three aces
• The Eagles trailed 20-21 and would lose the set on four straight errors
• The second set saw Benedictine take a 4-1 lead and despite North Central tying it at 12, the Eagles would cruise to a 25-20 win that ended with a Kristina Billie ace
• Kelcey Adams would serve seven straight to start the third set but North Central would come back to tie it at 10 and BenU would never regain the lead, falling 25-20
• After a back and forth start to the fourth set, Benedictine would take a 16-12 lead and go on to win 25-21
• In the fifth set, the Eagles trailed 6-4 and allowed North Central to go on a 4-0 run before winning 15-8
 
STAT LEADERS
• As a team, NCC out-hit BenU with 57-39 kills
• Erin Wiegand led the team with 12 kills and two block assists
• Keriann Groen recorded eight kills and hit .300 in the match
•Taylor Dunwell tallied seven kills
• Defensively, Billie led all players with 31 digs while O'Boyle had 19 digs, three aces and 15 assists
• Adams had 10 digs and 17 assists while Vanessa Possidoni had 11 digs

THE FINAL

Benedictine 3, Lake Forest 2 (24-26, 25-13, 26-24, 22-25, 15-5)
 
THE DETAILS

• The Eagles battled with Lake Forest in their second match of the day, falling 24-26 in the first set
• The second set saw Dunwell record six kills as the Eagles ended the 25-13 win on two straight Groen kills
• Benedictine led 8-1 in the third set en route to a 26-24 win
• After a back and forth start to the fourth set, Lake Forest took a 19-14 lead
• Benedictine trailed 24-15 but would go on a 6-0 run to cut it within three but it wasn't enough as the Foresters would force a fifth set
• It was all BenU in the fifth set, taking a 5-0 lead on three Martin aces
• Possidoni won the match with an ace
• As a team, BenU recorded 48 kills, 97 digs, 17 aces and 13 blcoks
 
STAT LEADERS
• Dunwell stole the show, leading all players with 22 kills and also had four block assists
• Wiegand had 10 kills and three block assists
• Adams recorded 24 assists, 13 digs and three aces
• Securing a match-high 44 digs was Billie while Possidoni had seven digs and six aces
• Caitlyn Martin tallied 14 digs and six aces

Benedictine volleyball, now 6-6, resume Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action when they host Dominican University on Wednesday, September 21, at 7:00 pm in the Dan and Ada Rice Center.
