Eagles Sweep Day Three in Florida

The Benedictine University softball team swept the third day of competition in Florida, first defeating #7 Linfield College then regional opponent Carthage College.

THE DETAILS
• Benedictine took a 3-0 lead in the first inning that started when Shannon Fritsche led off with a walk followed by a Kaitlyn Velazquez hit by pitch
• A double steal saw Fritsche take home on a Linfield error
• Holly Haberkorn tallied an RBI single and Emily Moore recorded her first hit of her career, an RBI single that gave BenU the 3-0 lead
• After a scoreless second the Eagles tallied two more runs after Angie Malsack tripled to right center, scoring Jenna Boyajian who doubled earlier in the inning
• Malsack scored on an error to make it 5-0
• In the sixth, Courtney Grasz drove in a run to make it 6-0
• Linfield rallied back in the top of the seventh, tallying six runs on four hits with one BenU error to tie the game
• The Eagles responded in the bottom of the frame when a BenU blooper to second scored Malsack who led off the inning with a double for the 7-6 victory
• Emily Chitwood held Linfield to six scoreless innings on the mound
• Haberkorn picked up her third win of the season
• As a team BenU tallied 11 hits, their most so far this season

THE DETAILS
• Carthage took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after a BenU error
• It didn't take long for the Eagles to respond, scoring two runs in the third after RBI singles from Velazquez and Grasz
• In the sixth, Grasz and Boyajian both tallied hits and Haberkorn drove in a run to take the 5-1 lead
• Haberkorn picked up her fourth win of the year
