BARRINGTON, IL - The Benedictine University men's lacrosse team kicked off the 2018 season with a loss to Carthage in an indoor contest

• Benedictine started the contest strong
• Mateo Salceda won the opening faceoff and a penalty set up Benedictine with a man-up situation just over a minute into the contest
• Corbin Gett, the program's all-time leading scorer, took advantage, scoring the first goal of the year on a feed from 
Randy Patrick
• Carthage peppered the cage the entire contest, but Benedictine opened a 2-0 lead with 4:52 left in the opening quarter on a Patrick goal with Gett returning the favor
• Carthage scored back-to-back goals to tie the game, earning the equalizer with just over a minute left in the first
• Will Reece III picked up a groundball following a turnover to begin the second and 
Nick Wood put Benedictine ahead again at 3-2
• The lead would be the final one of the day as Carthage tied the score with 11:28 remaining in the half and netted the next eight goals to nab an 1-3 lead
• Carthage found the back of the net six times in the second and led 8-3 at the half
• Shut out for nearly two straight quarters, Benedictine opened the fourth with a goal following a faceoff win when 
Anthony Leahy collected his first of the year on a helper from Reece III
• Ryden Scarnato set up the final goal of the day at the mid-point of the fourth when Wood tallied his second goal
• Carthage opened the season with a game last week and was picked to finish third in the CCIW
• The game was played in Barrington, IL at the Canlan Sportsplex

• Carthage held a 64-17 advantage in shots and won all but three faceoffs
• 11 of the Benedictine shots were on target
• Sam Sanko recorded 21 saves in goal, setting the single game program record
• The previous mark was 19 set by Jeffrey Smitheram against Hanover in 2013
• Benedictine finished with 16 groundballs and converted 17-of-25 clears
• Wood scored twice while Gett and Patrick each tallied a goal and an assist
• Leahy and 
Ross Hulick each picked up three groundballs

Benedictine (0-1) begins the home portion of the schedule on February 24 against the University of Dubuque in a non-conference contest
