Eagles Take Two From CUW

The Benedictine University softball team opened up Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play on Friday afternoon with a sweep of Concordia University Wisconsin that included a grand slam from Emily Chitwood in game two.

• Chitwood tallied her first homerun of the day in the second inning
• Kaitlyn Velazquez and Breanna Sobotka singled, both scoring on a triple from Angie Malsack to give BenU a 3-0 lead
• The Eagles added another run in the fourth after an RBI double from Alex Laphen
• Concordia tied it in the fifth when they tallied four runs off of four hits and one BenU error
• Benedictine had a huge fifth inning, tallying three runs off of four hits from Emily Moore, Elena Sakellaropoulos, Velazquez and Laphen
• CUW cut their deficit in the sixth, tallying one run to trail the Eagles 5-7
• Malsack tallied a run in the sixth to secure the BenU victory, 8-5

• It was BenU who got ahead in game two after Malsack led off with a double to center followed by a single from Moore
• Grasz drove the run in for the Eagles to take a 1-0 lead
• That lead didn't last long as CUW scored three runs off of four hits in the second
• Benedictine cut their deficit in the second, tallying a run off of a Sakellaropoulos homer
• The Concordia offense came alive in the third as they tallied three more runs to take a 6-1 lead
• The Eagles responded in the bottom of the frame with one more run after a single from Jenna Boyajian and a double from Chitwood
• Benedictine made it 6-5 in the fourth after a two-run homer from Moore
• In the sixth, CUW added two more runs to take an 8-5 lead
• Moore scored Sobotka who led off the sixth inning with a double
• With the bases loaded, Chitwood tallied her first collegiate career grand slam with a shot to right field, scoring four more runs to take the 10-8 lead and secure the Eagles victory
