Two Tight Games Produce Split for Baseball

• Neither team mustered much offense in the opener
• A two-run homer put Marian in front in the bottom of the sixth, the only runs allowed by starter Ivan Guzman
• Benedictine was able to tie the game in the eighth
• Sam Kerr was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home the first run while a sacrifice fly from Jack Surin tied the score
• Both runs were unearned
• Jimmy McLaughlin walked to lead off the ninth, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored the winning run on a single from Jack Feeley
• The second game saw Benedictine rally from a 3-1 deficit before four unanswered runs accounted for the difference
• Michael Chaffin tallied a two-out RBI single in the top of the third to put Benedictine in front in the second game
• Marian responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead
• Tyler Woynerowski drilled a two-run homer in the fifth to tie the game, but Marian scored twice in the bottom of the frame and tacked on two more in the seventh
• Woynerowski hit another homer in the ninth and Benedictine brought the tying run to the plate but could not even the score
• The loss ended a five-game win streak

• Guzman allowed just one earned run in seven innings in game one, striking out five
• James Wright picked up the win with two shutout frames
• Feeley and Chaffin each logged two hits in the first contest
• Alexander Schram started the second contest and worked three innings
• Chad DeGroot suffered the loss despite throwing four innings
• Woynerowski led the offense with three hits including the two homers, and drove home four of the five runs
