Baseball Starts Season with Split in Arkansas

CONWAY, AR - The Benedictine University baseball team officially kicked off play on Sunday by splitting a pair of games at Hendrix College, beginning a challenging non-conference slate.

The season got off to a difficult start as WashU scored four runs with two outs in the top of the first, three unearned, and added three more in the second to grab a 7-0 lead
• Benedictine scored the first run of the season in the bottom of the third
• Brenden Norberg tallied a one-out single and stole second base before crossing the plate on a single from Jared Trivette
• Playing as the away team, WashU plated two more runs in the top of the sixth to go ahead 9-1
• Chase Patterson scored on a wild pitch in the last of the seventh before a three-spot in the eighth accounted for the final runs
• Tyler Woynerowski knocked home the first run with a fielder's choice to plate Damen Castillo
• Jack Feeley logged an RBI single and Jack Surin crossed on a passed ball to cap the scoring

STAT LEADERS
•
Ryan Miller took the ball in the opener, working five innings and suffering the loss after allowing seven runs, just two of which were earned
• Miller issued four walks and struck out four
• Feeley was the only player to tally more than one hit in the opener, finishing 2-for-4 as Benedictine finished with six hits

James Wright stole the show in the second contest, pitching Benedictine to the win and breaking a six-game win streak for the hosts, who were off to their best start in 102 years
• Benedictine gave Wright all the support he would need with two runs in the top of the third
• Feeley singled, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch
• Surin singled home the first run of the contest
• Woynerowski followed with a sacrifice fly to drive home Michael Chaffin
• Hendrix scored in the bottom of the fifth but left the tying run in scoring position
• Alexander Schram and Marty Maves tallied strikeouts in the ninth, stranding the tying run in scoring position and collecting the first win of the season

STAT LEADERS

Wright threw seven innings and allowed just two hits, walking two and striking out seven
• The first Hendrix hit did not come until there was one out in the fifth
• Schram worked 1.2 innings and struck out three in relief as the pitching staff tallied 11 strikeouts
• Norberg finished with three hits as Benedictine notched seven in the contest

UP NEXT
Benedictine (1-1) will finish the venture to Arkansas with an 11:00 a.m. game against Hendrix on Monday.
