Women's Hoops Falls in Tournament Final

LISLE, IL - The Benedictine University women's basketball team saw a school record 17-game win streak end in the NACC Tournament Championship, falling to hot-shooting Edgewood at home.

THE DETAILS
•
Benedictine had to play from behind for most of the game after Edgewood scored the first seven points of the contest
• Trailing 12-6, Allison Michalski, who scored her 1,000th career point on Friday, knocked down two free throws to open a 8-0 run, finished on a layup from Alex Fanning to put Benedictine ahead 14-12
• Edgewood converted on a three-point play to lead again and held a 19-16 edge after the first 10 minutes
• The visitors, who finished 18-2 in NACC play during the regular season, led 29-22 halfway through the second
• Baskets from Michalski and Elia Diorio followed by a Hanna Piro three allowed Benedictine to tie the game at 29-29
• Threes from Ashley Brown and Claire Gibler put Benedictine ahead 39-35 in the closing minute and take a 39-37 edge into the break
• A layup from Fanning made the score 45-43 with 6:37 to play in the third before Edgewood got hot and couldn't miss
• Edgewood ripped off the next 21 points to take a 64-45 lead with two minutes remaining in the third
• Edgewood was able to counter every run in the fourth quarter to keep Benedictine at bay
• A free throw from Reggie Much brought Benedictine within 79-68 with 3:25 left but Edgewood kept hitting and held off any potential rally
• The game featured eight ties and six lead changes
• The loss marked the first since December 29 against East Texas Baptist and broke a 25-game home streak, the first loss since February 18, 2018
• Edgewood receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament

Edgewood shot 68 percent in the third quarter and finished the game at 51.6 percent while holding a 42-34 edge on the glass
• Benedictine made only three field goals in the third quarter and finished the game shooting 40.9 percent
• Michalski led Benedictine with 20 points and added nine rebounds
• Gibler logged 18 while Fanning posted 17 to go with 10 rebounds in a double-double

UP NEXT
Benedictine (24-3) will learn on Monday if they are selected for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Benedictine was ranked fifth in the last regional rankings but two teams ranked ahead lost, also falling into the pool for potential at-large bids.
