Benedictine University had six representatives chosen to the D3football.com All-Region 5 teams.
Anthony Senerchia and
Blake Davis were named to the Second Team while
Tyler Jarnagin,
Gannon Grider,
Ahmad Washington and
Tanner Mateus were chosen to the Third Team.
Senerchia was a First Team All-NACC selection at tight end. The senior grabbed 10 touchdowns in his first season as a starter. Davis was a Second Team All-NACC selection at defensive back but received All-Region honors as a special teams player after recording a pair of blocked kicks. Senerchia and Davis were both named Academic All-District for success in the classroom and on the field.
Jarnagin re-wrote the school and conference record books this season and was selected as a Semifinalist for the Gagliardi Trophy as the most outstanding player in NCAA Division III. The quarterbacks on the first two teams are also Gagliardi semifinalists. Grider anchored the offensive line at right tackle and was a First Team All-NACC selection. Benedictine posted one of the top offenses in the nation this year. Washington led the team in tackles and recorded over 100 on the season to average more than 10 per contest. Washington led the team in tackles in nearly every game this year and was a First Team All-NACC choice. Mateus was recently selected as a finlist for the Fred Mitchell Award as the top placekicker in NCAA FCS, Division II, Division III, NAIA and NJCAA. Mateus set the Benedictine single season record for PATs and did not miss an attempt on the year while earning First Team All-NACC status, leading the conference in scoring by a kicker after adding six field goals.
The All-Region awards are voted on by representatives from each region. There were 146 nominations in Region 5. Players who earn All-Region are eligible for All-America honors, which are announced at the Stagg Bowl.
Benedictine finished the season with an 8-2 record. The NACC had 17 representatives with Benedictine sharing the most players from the conference selected to the teams. Region 5 had four players on the list who are semifinalists for the Gagliardi Trophy, including Jarnagin. Three of those were quarterbacks. The finalists will be
announced today.
