Second Half Costs Football in Home Opener

LISLE, IL - The Benedictine University football team opened the home season with a contest under the lights and suffered a 35-24 loss to visiting Carroll University.

Benedictine opened the scoring on their first drive of the game. Tyler Jarnagin completed seven passes including a three-yard find to Anthony Senerchia in the endzone to open the scoring with 7:08 to play in the first. Benedictine recovered a fumble on the kickoff and appeared to be in a position to run away early, building a 14-0 lead on a two-yard pass to Kiandre Morris. Carroll scored early in the second quarter following a 10-play drive to produce the final points of the half as Benedictine led 14-7.

Pinned deep to start the second half, Calin Gurau broke free for an 83-yard reception that opened the door for Nick Shelton to reel in a 10-yard strike as Benedictine led 21-7. Carroll quickly responded to pull within 21-14 before Tanner Mateus booted a 26-yard field goal to put Benedictine up two scores at 24-14 with 7:02 remaining in the third. Benedictine would not score again. Carroll took the lead on the first drive of the fourth quarter and forced a quick three-and-out, scoring another touchdown to account for the final.

Benedictine outgained Carroll 475-361. Jarnagin completed 32 passes for 426 yards with three touchdowns. Gurau led the receiving attack with six catches for 152 yards. Nine different players caught passes. Ahmad Washington anchored the defense with 12 tackles for a second consecutive week. Jalaan Owens notched 11 with an interception and a pair of pass breakups. Joel Nanni added 10 stops.

Benedictine (1-1) faces Concordia Wisconsin on the road next week to open conference play.
