Women's Basketball Drops Home Finale

LISLE, IL - The Benedictine University women's basketball team saw an eight-game win streak come to a close at the hands of visiting Lakeland on Saturday.

THE DETAILS
- Lakeland jumped out of the gates, taking the lead early and not trailing for most of the contest
- The visitors led 7-0 before Claire Gibler scored five straight
- Lakeland opened a nine-point lead and held a 21-15 edge after the opening 10 minutes
- Benedictine pulled within a single point just before halftime on a three-point play from Jordan Carlquist but trailed 35-32 at the break
- Brilan McCory scored five points in a 7-0 run as Benedictine came back to tie the score at 41-41 just past the halfway point of the third
- Charsan McCory continued the run as Benedictine led for the first time at 43-41 with 3:32 to go in the third
- The game was even until Lakeland used a 6-0 spurt to lead 60-54 with 3:25 remaining
- Sara Smith brought Benedictine within 60-59 at the 2:21 mark but Lakeland scored five in a row and held on for the win, hitting two free throws after a basket from McCory made the score 67-65
- The game featured five ties and four lead changes
- Prior to the contest seniors Alex Fanning, Mary Frederick, Claire Gibler, Michaela Kimbell, Erin Moore, Hanna Piro and Britney Pitzer were honored

STAT LEADERS
- Benedictine shot 35.8 percent while Lakeland countered at 46.7 percent and held a 41-38 lead on the glass
- Smith powered Benedictine with 13 points
- Gibler added 11 with McCory notching nine
- Fanning finished with eight points and 13 rebounds

UP NEXT
Benedictine (14-9, 12-4 NACC) will travel to Edgewood on Tuesday night in a game that will determine the third seed in the conference tournament
