The Benedictine University softball team secured a slot in the NACC Tournament on the final day of the season by sweeping Rockford at home 5-3 and 5-0.
Benedictine needed to outlast Rockford in the opener. Rockford hit a three-run homer in the third to take a 3-1 lead. Benedictine tied the game with two runs in the fifth and neither team scored until
Taylor Oppenhuis hit a walk-off two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the 10th. Benedictine finished with 12 hits in the game, three of which came from Oppenhuis, who also drove home three.
Alexandra Loizon tossed the complete game, striking out six in 10 innings.
Colleen Schmit drove home the first three runs of the second game as Benedictine set the tone early. Schmit hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first and added an RBI single in the third.
Lauryn Olson tacked on a two-run single in the fifth. Schmit and Oppenhuis both finished with three hits in the win.
Jasmine Lozano allowed just six hits in the circle to earn the shutout.
