The Benedictine University men's basketball team won another tight contest, securing their third straight win by a 78-72 score in overtime at Rockford on Wednesday night.
Rockford grabbed the lead midway through the first and went on to hold a seven-point edge while taking a 40-36 advantage into the locker room after a second chance basket to beat the buzzer. Trailing for most of the second half,
Nick Howard made a pair of free throws for Benedictine with just under a minute remaining to tie the game.
Trevor Montiel's game-winning attempt missed and the game headed to overtime. After Rockford scored the first bucket of the extra session, Benedictine reeled off six straight and did not trail again.
Tanner Resch put the game away with a breakaway layup after draining two free throws.
The game featured seven ties and eight lead changes. Four players reached double digits led by 17 from Montiel. Howard and
Drew Stokes both added 14 with Howard reeling in 12 rebounds. Resch tallied 11.
Benedictine shot 49.1 percent in the contest and connected on 22 free throws while tallying 38 points in the paint.
Benedictine has played 10 games decided by 10 points or less this year.
Benedictine (9-7, 6-3 NACC) will host Wisconsin Lutheran on Saturday.
