The Benedictine University men's basketball team claimed a second consecutive victory by shooting past Lakeland 90-76 to secure a season sweep.
Patrick Mayfield knocked down a three-pointer to open the game and
Aidan Werth notched back-to-back buckets as Benedictine opened a 7-1 lead four minutes into the game. Lakeland led briefly at 9-8 but a
Tanner Resch jumper put Benedictine ahead for good at 10-9 with 13:54 left in the first. Benedictine embarked on a 9-0 run shortly thereafter to open a double figure edge. Benedictine led by as many as 14 in the first and took a 40-31 lead into the half. The lead quickly grew to double figures again in the second half as Benedictine led by as many as 17. Lakeland pulled within five but could get no closer.
Benedictine shot 62 percent in the second half and finished the contest at 55 percent. Mayfield was 6-of-9 from bonus distance and finished with a game high 24, adding seven rebounds.
Nathan LaPlant finished 7-for-10 from the field and amassed 21, a career best. Resch added 16 with six boards and five assists while Werth tallied 10 in 16 minutes. Benedictine held a 39-33 advantage on the glass.
Benedictine (7-13, 6-7 NACC) heads to Edgewood on Wednesday.
