Tanner Resch put together one of the top scoring performances in conference history as the Benedictine University men's basketball team stormed back from down 17 in the second half to post an 83-79 win in overtime at Edgewood in a back-and-forth contest on Wednesday night.
Trailing 13-12 midway through the first half, Resch connected on a three-pointer that put Benedictine ahead 15-13 and kicked off a 14-0 run that saw Benedictine lead 26-13 with 9:12 to go in the first. Edgewood scored 17 straight late in the first half to move ahead by double figures and took a 46-32 lead into the break. Benedictine trailed by 17 at 62-45 with 11:52 left but slowly chipped away.
Ryan Tucker connected on a three-pointer with 6:05 remaining to pull Benedictine within 68-61. Down seven with 4:01 left, Benedictine embarked on an 11-0 run to take a 74-72 lead on a Resch layup with 40 seconds to play but Edgewood was able to tie the game and send the contest to overtime. Edgewood led by three midway through overtime, but Resch kicked off a 7-0 run to close the game and seal the win.
Resch finished the game 16-of-30 from the field with just one three and only three attempts from beyond the arc.
Patrick Mayfield tallied 20 with
Aidan Werth collecting 12 and Tucker 11. Mayfield, the reigning conference player of the week, also reeled in 11 boards for a double-double. The contest featured five ties and nine lead changes. Benedictine shot 52 percent in the second half and made just one field goal in overtime but scored six points at the line. Benedictine finished the game shooting 44.9 percent.
Benedictine (8-13, 7-7 NACC) heads to Wisconsin Lutheran, a top-10 team, on Saturday afternoon.
