The Benedictine University men's basketball team opened the final week of the regular season by heading to Rockford, suffering a 78-59 loss on Wednesday night.
Benedictine played from behind for nearly the entire contest. After
Aidan Werth opened the game with a basket, Rockford rattled off 12 straight. The hosts led by as many as 11 points in the opening stanza, but Benedictine used a 9-0 run opened with back-to-back threes from
Patrick Mayfield and
Ryan Tucker to claw within a pair at 29-27 in the final minute of the half. Werth scored the first five points of the second as Benedictine jumped ahead briefly at 33-31. Rockford used another run to again seize control, scoring the next 11. Benedictine was within seven halfway through the second but Rockford was able to pull away.
Benedictine shot just 34 percent in the contest and was outrebounded 45-28. Mayfield led all scorers with 22 points. Werth tacked on 13 with
Tanner Resch contributing 11.
Benedictine (9-15, 8-9 NACC) faces a near must win game on Saturday afternoon when Concordia Wisconsin visits for a 1pm contest.
