Softball Opens Season with Split in Florida

The Benedictine University softball team opened the 2025 season in Florida on the annual spring break trip, splitting two contests.

GAME ONE: BETHANY LUTHERAN 3, BENEDICTINE 2
Bethany Lutheran hit a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to steal the opener.

Benedictine scored single runs in the first two innings and led all the way until the seventh. Playing as the visiting team, Morgan Bruno opened the year with a single, stole second and scored on an RBI double from Victoria Duszynski. Mia Giammarese opened the second by reaching on an error and scored when Breanne Deutscher lifted a sacrifice fly.

Bethany Lutheran did not record a hit until there were two outs in the third. Benedictine finished with six hits in the loss, all coming from different individuals. Makenzie Johnson struck out nine in a complete game defeat.

GAME TWO: BENEDICTINE 9, RPI 8
A back-and-forth affair saw Benedictine record their first win behind four runs in the fifth.

The game was even throughout the early stages with the contest tied at 5-5 entering the fifth. Playing as the home team, Benedictine did not take the lead until the fifth. Jenna Bartke drove home the go-ahead run with a groundout before three runs came in on an error. RPI scored twice in the seventh and had the tying run in scoring position but Johnson, the third pitcher of the game, was able to nail down the save.

Benedictine amassed 14 hits with four collecting more than one. Bruno drove home two.

Benedictine (1-1) continues the journey on Sunday.
