The Benedictine University baseball team saw an eight-game conference win streak come to an end at Marian despite scoring nine runs or more in each contest.
MARIAN 14, BENEDICTINE 13
A game of back-and-forth big innings came to an end in the bottom of the ninth when Marian scored three times to steal a 14-13 win.
The bats were working early as Benedictine led 3-0 behind a run in the second and two in the third before Marian responded with five in the bottom of the third.
Zach Fell tallied an RBI single in the second and Tommy Jusi drove home two in the third. The anything you can do I can do better started in the fifth. Benedictine scored four times to open a 7-5 lead. Fell and Jusi added to their RBI totals in the inning while
Justin Nonnenmann and
Nic Castrovillari posted RBI singles. Marian tied the game with two in the bottom half.
Both teams scored four times in the seventh.
Kevin Butler and
George Betevis notched RBI singles while
Brennan Fisher plated two with a single. Fell put Benedictine ahead 13-11 with a two-run single in the eighth before Marian scored three times in the ninth. The winning run scored on an infield hit with two outs.
Fell drove home four with Jusi adding three. Both players tallied two hits along with Fisher, Castrovillari, Nonnenmann and Butler. Benedictine amassed 15 in the loss.
Conner Kendall started and worked five innings.
MARIAN 13, BENEDICTINE 9
Marian scored seven runs in the fifth inning to run away in the second game. Benedictine held leads of 1-0 and 5-2 before the outburst.
Kyle Campbell notched two sacrifice flies as part of the early onslaught.
Betevis, Fisher and Jusi all finished with two hits as Benedictine racked up 11.
Jackson Bahn started and threw four innings.
Benedictine (20-15, 11-7 NACC) visits Carthage in a non-conference game on Monday afternoon.
