Senior Day Sweep for Softball

The Benedictine University softball team recorded a sweep on senior day, scoring a pair of key wins over Concordia Chicago to sweep the weekend.

BENEDICTINE 6, CONCORDIA CHICAGO 3
Benedictine did not trail in the opener. Haley Barnes doubled home the first run of the game as the third batter of the contest. Benedictine added three runs in the third with a Victoria Duszynski sacrifice fly, a double steal and an error.

Concordia Chicago hit a three-run homer in the sixth to draw within 4-3 but Benedictine responded with two in the bottom to grab the win. Senior Breanne Deutscher doubled home a run and Duszynski added an RBI double.

Benedictine finished with 12 hits in the opener. Deutscher logged three with Morgan Bruno and Jenna Bartke tallying two each. Mckenzie Johnson grabbed the win in the circle, twirling a complete game while striking out eight.

BENEDICTINE 4, CONCORDIA CHICAGO 3
The back-and-forth affair saw Benedictine walk-off with two outs in the bottom of the seventh on an error. Both teams struck in the first inning. Barnes singled home the first Benedictine run.

After a Concordia Chicago run in the fifth, Benedictine responded with two to take a 3-2 edge. Deutscher singled home a run and Jasmine Lozano helped her cause with a sacrifice fly. Concordia Chicago tied the game in the seventh before Benedictine was able to win the game when Taylor Oppenhuis reached on an error to score Barnes with the game-winner.

Lozano helped her own cause, working out of trouble, and spun 6.2 innings in the circle, striking out four. Both teams tallied 12 hits. Bruno, Barnes, Deutscher and Oppenhuis all recorded two hits.

Benedictine (21-13, 8-8 NACC) visits Alverno on Wednesday.
