The Benedictine University football team moved to 4-0 on the season by rolling past Lakeland 49-13 on the road Saturday night.
Benedictine forced a fumble on the opening kickoff and was able to take advantage with the game's first score when Dino Stephens zipped in from 14 yards out less than two minutes into the game. Lakeland utilized a long drive to tie the game but attempted an onside kick that was recovered by Benedictine. Taking advantage of the short field,
Marcus Martin hit Stephens for a 12-yard touchdown pass.to make the score 14-7 with 6:34 left in the opening quarter. Lakeland was able to score on the ensuing possession but a missed extra point kept Benedictine in front at 14-13.
Stephens broke free early in the second quarter for a 36-yard touchdown to make the score 21-13. After forcing a turnover on downs it was Stephens again, logging a 23-yard run with 9:11 left in the half to make the score 28-13. Stephens scored again in the final minute before the half, this time from six yards away, as Benedictine went into the break leading 35-13.Â
Jason Moore snared a 12-yard touchdown pass from Martin with 2:54 to play in the third, making the score 42-13. The final points of the game came when Martin hooked up with Moore for a 63-yard score.
Benedictine piled up 520 yards of offense in the win including 288 on the ground. Stephens gained 200 yards on 24 carries and also caught a pair of passes for 21 yards, contributing five touchdowns.
Tyler Pospisil added 72 yards rushing. Moore reeled in 12 catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Martin completed 17 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns.
Nick Irion led the defense with 10 stops including two for loss. Â
Benedictine (4-0, 2-0) heads to Wisconsin Lutheran next Saturday night for a 6pm contest.
