Benedictine sweeps Grand Canyon Classic in convincing fashion

Benedictine traveled westward to take on two midwestern foes in Grand Canyon Classic

Cameron Snelling had a team-high 12 rebounds against Loras.
PHOENIX, AZ – The red-hot Eagles continued their winning ways in sunny Arizona sweeping the Grand Canyon Classic with wins over Loras and Southwestern College.

Both victories came in convincing fashion, as the Eagles were able to defeat both squads by double digits, Loras 85-63 and Southwestern 81-65. Thanks to the two wins, Benedictine’s win streak now sits at a season-high four games.

Benedictine (7-4) began play on Tuesday taking on Loras College (Dubuque, IA) in a game that saw the Eagles dominate both halves.

Loras (6-6) jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead before Benedictine led by Nate Green’s 21 points, stormed back. Benedictine tied the contest at 10 apiece with just over 12 minutes remaining, this would be the last time Loras saw the lead.

The Eagles continued their solid play throughout the half increasing their lead to as much as 12. Senior Rob Bridgeman led the way in the first half picking up 10 of his 15 points in the first stanza.

In what has to be encouraging to head coach Keith Bunkenburg and his staff, Benedictine exploded out of the gates in the second half scoring 54 points securing the 22 point victory.

Leading scorers for the Eagles included Green (21 points, 7 assists, 5 steals, 4 rebounds), Bridgeman (15 points, 4 rebounds), Terry Licht (12 points, 6 rebounds) and Michael Fahey (12 points).

Cameron Snelling led Benedictine with 12 rebounds including three on the offensive end.

Fresh off their blowout victory over Loras, it was time Wednesday for the Eagles to take on the Moundbuilders of Southwestern College.

Southwestern came into the contest at 7-5 overall, but posed a tough challenge for Benedictine thanks to their size.

Southwestern’s first and last lead came with 13 minutes left in the first. With the Moundbuilders up 18-16, the Eagles went into overdrive and never looked back, leading by as much as 16 in the first half.

The second half was much of the same for Benedictine as they continued to keep their double-digit lead.

Snelling came alive in the second game scoring a team-high 17 points, while also grabbing seven rebounds.

Bridgeman kept his momentum from the Loras game chipping in an additional 12 points while shooting 4-of-6 from the field.

Mike Bumber led Benedictine in rebounds with six, while also adding seven points from the floor.
