Box Score
Benedictine University's men's basketball team dropped to 1-1 in NAC play Saturday losing to Lakeland College in overtime 74-70.
The heartbreaking overtime loss dropped Benedictine to 3-3 overall.
The Eagles stormed out of the gates grabbing a 32-24 lead at the half thanks in large part to an eight point first half from junior guard Cameron Snelling.
Benedictine’s defense was able to halt Lakeland’s (3-3, 2-0 in NAC) offensive attack as the Muskies leading scorer Josh Schwarz was held to a mere five points in the first half.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, they were unable to maintain that pace as Schwarz and his Muskie counterpart Josh Regal both had impressive second halves as Lakeland climbed back into the contest.
Schwarz’s missed layup with just 32 seconds remaining turned into the excellent opportunity as Anthony Cobb grabbed one of his team-high 12 rebounds and threw in a layup, tying the contest at 61 apiece.
The Eagles were hurt on second chance points all afternoon as the Muskies amassed 19 total to Benedictine’s six.
With a chance to snatch the game, sophomore Nate Green’s jumper rimmed out with only two seconds remaining bringing the contest into overtime.
There, it was the Josh Schwarz (26 points, 7 rebounds) show, as Schwarz scored all but two of Lakeland’s 13 overtime points. Despite Green’s three point basket in the waning seconds of the contest it was too little too late for the Eagles.
Even with the loss, Benedictine was able to take some positives from Saturday’s contest. Freshman Bradley Bruno grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in 14 minutes while Green led the Eagles with 15 points and three assists.
Michael Fahey (11 points), Snelling (12 points) and Dan Klecan (11) were the other double-digit scorers for Benedictine.
