LISLE, Illinois – A combination of poor shooting and turnovers Tuesday doomed Benedictine University as it fell to Northern Athletics Conference foe Dominican University, 69-58.
Fresh off its first victory on the renovated floor of the Dan and Ada Rice Center, Benedictine looked to maintain that momentum going into Tuesday’s contest.
The only problem though was the NAC’s third leading scorer, Dominican guard Marquis Turley, who after a quiet first half exploded for 19 second-half points. Turley ended Tuesday’s contest with 25 points with an 18-of-21 night from the free throw line. On the season, Turley is averaging 20.5 points per game.
Benedictine (10-6, 4-4 in NAC) came out of the gates with an early 4-2 lead, but a 16-2 Dominican run gave the visiting Stars a 14-point advantage midway through the first half.
Dominican (6-9, 4-3 in NAC) opened the second half with an 11-5 run to take a 22-point advantage with a little more than 17 minutes left in the second stanza.
The Eagles climbed back later in the contest when a
Dan Klecan (12 points, 6 rebounds) three-pointer cut the Stars advantage to seven.
Turley though, put Dominican on his back, scoring on four consecutive possessions to push the Benedictine deficit back to seven.
Turley and teammate Xavier Patterson would hit six of their next seven free throws to close out the contest and hand Benedictine its fourth NAC loss.
In addition to Klecan, #A.J. Brown# (12 points, 5 rebounds) and
Terry Licht (10 points) both hit double digits, while
Cameron Snelling had a team-high 12 rebounds.
Benedictine will be back in action at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Rice Center as the Eagles battle rival Aurora University.
