ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Benedictine University women's lacrosse team finished spring break week by dropping an 8-7 decision to Fontbonne in its first ever Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference contest.
Fontbonne struck for the first two goals of the contest before Benedictine responded with a pair of gaols from
Hannah Payne and
Annette Dzielski to tie the game. Trailing 3-2, Benedictine scored two straight to open a 4-3 lead at the half.
Caitlin Strubin scored the go-ahead marker in the final minute of the half.
Payne added a second gaol early in the second half to extend the Benedictien advantage to 5-3.
McKall Pugliese tallied her third goal of the game with 11:54 left in the contest on a free position attempt to put Benedictine ahead 7-5. Fontbonne was able to tie the game with back-to-back goals from Tierney O'Brien with the equalizer coming in the final minute. O'Brien scored again in overtime to provide the difference.
Pugliese scored three times on seven shots while Payne added two on five shots and controlled seven groundballs.
Tricia Baluyut stopped seven shots in goal for the Eagles.
Benedictine (1-4) is off until April 4 when conference play continues against Carthage in a 7:00 p.m. contest in Kenosha, Wis.
