LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University women's lacrosse team opened the 2014 season with a defeat at the hands of Kalamazoo College by an 11-8 score.
Benedictine did not lead in the contest.
Taylor Pugliese tallied the first goal for Benedictine, finding the back of the net with 21:54 remaining in the first half to even the game at 1-1. Kalamazoo notched five consecutive goals to take a 6-1 lead before Benedictine began to rally.
Gabby Rowe scored late in the final minute of the opening half to pull Benedictine within 6-2 at the break.
Benedictine scored three straight goals to open the second half to battle within a single goal. Two of the goals came from
Samantha Link. Kalamazoo netted two straight to move ahead 8-5.
Becca Gullett brought Benedictine within 8-6 by finishing a free position attempt with just over 10 minutes to go.
Hannah Payne tallied the final two goals for Benedictine in the contest.
Payne scored three times with Link adding two. Benedictine finished the game with 17 shots.
Benedictine (0-1) hosts the Illinois Institute of Technology on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
