The Benedictine University women's basketball team opened the new year with a win, taking down Alverno on the road in conference play Wednesday night.
Benedictine trailed only briefly in a contest that saw a pair of ties.
Makenzie Carroll gave Benedictine a lead they would not relinquish two minutes into the opening quarter. The lead reached double figures early in the second on a basket from
Halle Williams. Benedictine led by 10 at the break (31-21) and was able to push the lead to 17 in the third and 19 in the fourth, easing to the victory.
Autumn Rucker, who notched a career high 19-point showing in California, came off the bench to pace Benedictine with 18 points. Carroll pitched in 12. Eleven different players scored in the contest as the bench poured in 36.
Benedictine shot 36 percent for the game and was 13-of-18 from the line. Alverno held a 40-35 advantage on the glass.
Benedictine (2-10, 2-1 NACC) travels to Concordia Chicago on Saturday.
