LISLE, Illinois - Benedictine University drained 15 three-pointers and shot 62 percent from the field to cruise past rival Aurora University 96-83 Thursday in a Northern Athletics Conference South division clash at the Rice Center.
The Eagles set the tone early as
Michael Fahey and
Dan Klecan buried treys to open an early 6-0 edge.
Terry Licht's three-pointer with 12:34 to go in the first put Benedictine up 24-10.
Aurora climbed back in the contest, pulling within 37-36 when Shane Roland connected on a three-pointer to cap an 18-4 run. But Benedictine answered with a 10-0 run capped by a
Cameron Snelling three-pointer, and led by 13 at the break after opening the game shooting 69 percent including a sizzling 10-of-14 from three-point range (71 percent).
Aurora (7-9, 4-5 in NAC) was able to cut the lead to nine with 15:56 remaining, but a 19-6 Benedictine run stretched the lead to 22 points. The Eagles would lead by as many as 23 points and never trailed in the game, easing to the victory.
Four players scored in double figures for the Eagles led by Snelling, who finished with a double-double by pouring in a game-best 26 points and reeling in 11 rebounds. He connected on five three-pointers.
Jerrell Tribble netted 20 points while
Rob Bridgeman scored 14 with an electrifying dunk and Licht chipped in 10 off the bench. Fahey dished out seven assists.
Aurora was led in scoring by Lance Robinson, who fouled out with 22 points.
Benedictine (11-6, 5-4) takes to the road Wednesday, January 27, traveling to Milwaukee to meet Milwaukee School of Engineering. The Eagles scored a 72-67 decision over the Raiders earlier this season. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
