Benedictine preps for weekend doubleheader

Both men and women's teams will be on full display this weekend

Rob Bridgeman will be one of two seniors honored before Saturday's final men's home game.
Benedictine University will have a full slate of basketball Saturday, February 13 as both the men and women's teams will be in action.

The women kick off the double header with a 2:00 p.m. tipoff against visiting Wisconsin Lutheran College.

Benedictine sits at 10-10, 8-7 in Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) and have won five of its last six. Thanks to the run, the Eagles have climbed back into contention in the NAC currently sitting at third place in the NAC South.

Coming to town will be the NAC South leading Wisconsin Lutheran College.

The Warriors sit at 12-10 overall with an 11-5 mark in conference. The NAC's second leading scorer Whitney Miller (16.1 points per game) leads Wisconsin Lutheran's potent scoring offense. Wisconsin Lutheran currently leads the NAC with a +3.0 scoring margin, while placing second in FG percentage with a 40.7 mark.

Benedictine counters with one of the best defenses in the NAC spearheaded by the conference leader in steals, starting point guard Lidia Arias (Bridgeview, Ill.). Offensively, Jenn Bren (St. Charles, Ill.) has led Benedictine with 11.5 points per game, while Karyn Conerty (Palos Heights, Ill.) has also hit double digits averaging 10.3 on the year.

After the women's game, the men will tip off against Wisconsin Lutheran in what is their final home game of the season. Wisconsin Lutheran brings the number four scoring offense in the NAC into the Rice Center to battle a Benedictine team that has dropped four of its last five.

Despite the losses, Benedictine still sits in contention for a NAC Tournament spot, 12-10 overall with a 6-8 mark in conference. A win Saturday can bring the Eagles back on the right path.

Wisconsin Lutheran sits at 8-12 overall; however, the Warriors hold a 7-6 mark in the NAC. The Warriors boast the fourth best scoring offense in the NAC led by Sam Siemers (14.8 points per game), Kyle Madson (14.2 points per game) and Ben Ziesemer (12.5 points per game).

Fortunately for Benedictine, Wisconsin Lutheran has had trouble keeping opponents away from the basket sitting dead last in the NAC in scoring defense along with a -4.7 scoring margin on the year.

Saturday's game rounds out the men's home stretch this year but also marks the final home games in the Benedictine careers of seniors Michael Fahey (Chicago, Ill.) and Rob Bridgeman (Oak Lawn, Ill.).

The three have experienced many highs during their Benedictine career including an opening game against Northwestern University in 2007-2008 and an NAC South championship in 2008-2009.

Fahey and Bridgeman will be honored before Saturday's tipoff at 4:15 p.m. The women have three seniors to honor as Sara Sutherland (Rockford, Ill.), Karissa Povlsen (DeKalb, Ill.), and Monika Krozel (Norridge, Ill.) take the floor.
